RuneScape: Dragonwilds Co-op and Dedicated Servers
1–4 online, Shockbyte up to 6, shared vaults, and the roles that keep a world moving.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds is an online co-op survival game, not a local-only split-screen and not a solo-only grind. Default sessions support 1–4 players through Epic Online Services and Steam. Shockbyte dedicated servers, added with the Dowdun Reach update, raise that cap to 6 and keep the world online when nobody is hosting. You can also run the dedicated server tool on a spare PC or in the cloud; Shockbyte is Jagex’s partnered host, not the only binary.
The game entered Steam Early Access on 15 April 2025 as a Windows title. Crossplay with PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled with 1.0 on 15 September 2026. Until that date, treat PC friends as the live pool and pad players as the group you will merge in September.
How a session actually works
One player creates or selects a world. Everyone else joins from the in-game browser, an invite, or a direct IP on dedicated. Peer sessions live only while the host is in the game. If the host logs off, the valley sleeps. Dedicated servers do not: the Bramblemead hall, the lodestones, and the chests stay up so a night-owl can smelt while the rest of the party is at work.
Progress is shared in the world, not cloned into four private Ashenfalls. Vault cores on a plinth, a planted lodestone, and a roofed bed are world objects. If someone plants a stone at a copper node, everyone can hop to it. If someone crafts the last bronze bars into a door, everyone is short a Challenge Horn. Set chest rules on night one.
You can still play alone in a 1-player session. Solo is supported. Co-op is the mode the bosses and the 6-player cap are built around, especially once Kuldra lands.
Dedicated servers and Shockbyte
Dowdun Reach shipped a free Steam tool named RuneScape: Dragonwilds Dedicated Servers. Shockbyte plans go 2 / 4 / 6 players. The 6-player plan is the raid-sized box. Home hosting needs roughly 2 GB RAM plus 1 GB per player and open ports starting at 7777. If that sentence already sounds like a second job, pay Shockbyte and spend the evening in a vault instead.
Dedicated boxes need a restart after patches. Keep the server and the clients on the same game version. Construction XP lands on the person who places the piece, so rotate who fills Ghost Mode instead of watching one builder forever. Vanilla is the assumption for this wiki and for 1.0.
Roles that prevent a messy base
Do not all main Attack. Split the chores.
- Construction / builder — one player lives on B, Ghost Mode, and Eye of Oculus. They own roofs, the unroofed furnace yard, and the lodestone spots. The building guide is their bible.
- Runecrafter — one player lives on the altar. Law Runes for hops, Astral for Oculus, Fire for Superheat and the furnace. Goblin sacks are a group farm until Runecrafting 16, then the altar takes over.
- Combat split — melee, ranged, and mage so vault rooms and dragon hitboxes are covered. Three melees on Velgar is how you all eat the same claw slam.
Gathering can rotate. Mining 11 Rocksplosion and Woodcutting 11 Axtral Projection should exist on at least two characters so a missing builder does not freeze bronze. The getting started guide is still the first-hour script; run it in parallel, not as four people crowding Doric.
Shared vaults, lodestones, and manners
Clear the first Temple Woods vaults together. Cores are heavy and rare enough that greed is visible. Call dibs in voice, or put cores in a labelled chest next to the planned lodestone. Plant one stone at the house and one at the current mine. Spare cores stay in a pack, not in a mystery crate behind the tannery. The vaults guide has the 32 Stone / 20 Essence / 1 Core recipe and the unroofed furnace tax in shards.
Beds: each player wants a roofed bed roll in the hall so wipes do not scatter respawns across three outposts. Food: cook in bulk on the campfire; do not nibble the only antipoison before a dragon pull. Repair: Magical Mending and the T key exist so the hall does not rot while everyone is in Umbral Sands.
Boss nights need a caller. Velgar’s meteor phase is easy if someone says “flight.” Kuldra will not be easier. Practise calls on vault Archons. If your group cannot share a core without a spreadsheet, fix that before 15 September 2026.
Crossplay and 1.0
When 1.0 ships, the same dedicated world is scheduled to take PC and console clients. Bindings on pad follow the controls Xbox layout: A jump, B evade, RT/LT primary/secondary, RB special, X interact, Y inventory, D-pad down build. Keyboard players should not assume the builder is on a mouse. Eye of Oculus is harder on a stick; keep the Construction main on the device they actually build with.
Price on Steam is about $29.99. Every player needs a copy; dedicated hosting is a separate bill. Play together from the first roof. A shared tannery in Bramblemead teaches who smelts, who crafts Law Runes, and who carries the spare Vault Core.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Is RuneScape: Dragonwilds local co-op?
No. It is online co-op for 1–4 players, with Shockbyte dedicated servers supporting up to 6. There is no local-only split-screen mode.
When were dedicated servers added?
With the Dowdun Reach update. Jagex partnered with Shockbyte for hosted boxes, and you can also run the dedicated server tool at home or in the cloud.
Do we share vaults and lodestones?
Yes. Cores, stones, and the house exist in the world. Agree on chests and lodestone spots so one player does not spend the party's last core on a bench. See the vaults guide.
How should we split skills?
One Construction main, one Runecrafter, and a combat split of melee, ranged, and mage. Gathering spells should exist on at least two characters so the world does not stall.
Will consoles join our PC server?
Crossplay is scheduled with 1.0 on 15 September 2026. Until then the live pool is PC. Track it on the 1.0 launch page.
