RuneScape: Dragonwilds Dragonkin Vaults and Lodestones
Shards, cores, lodestones, and the unroofed furnace that turns vault loot into metal.
Dragonkin vaults are the dungeons that pay for the rest of Ashenfall. Every major region hides at least one. Guardians drop Vault Shards. Completing the route puts a Vault Core on a pedestal. Shards feed furnaces, forges, and later shields. Cores feed lodestones and a short list of masterwork items. If you skip vaults, you walk. If you run them, you teleport.
On the map, a blue flag with white stripes marks a vault mouth. The first two sit north and south of Temple Woods, close enough that the getting started hour can grab a core before bronze. Later vaults sit behind thorny vines, crumbled walls, or story gates. The region walkthrough is the order; this page is the kit.
What you actually loot
Vault Guardians, Sentinels, and Archons are the shard printers. Chests drop more shards, rune essence, and the occasional recipe. Cores sit on plinths, often more than one per vault, and they respawn on a multi-day timer, so a vault is a farm, not a one-shot. Recipes often come from Dragonkin effigies, not from the core itself. Spitfoot’s swamp vault is the one that teaches the Anti-Dragon Shield path you will want for Dragon Slayer.
Traps are fire jets, spikes, and collapsing floors. If you die inside, the gravestone lands at the outside entrance. Clear a bed at home first so a wipe is a lodestone hop, not a Temple Woods jog.
A Bone Club from the starter tannery still slaps in South Temple Woods. Bring food, clean water, and a spare weapon. Vaults do not pause thirst.
Lodestone recipe and Law Runes
The lodestone recipe unlocks when you pick up your first core:
- 32 Stone
- 20 Rune Essence
- 1 Vault Core
Place it from the build menu under Fast Travel. You cannot drop one inside a vault. You need two stones to hop, so the first core should live at the Bramblemead house and the second should live at whatever region you are currently mining. Fast travel spends Law Runes. Cost scales with distance and carry weight. Overload a bronze crate and the hop will bill you like a luxury teleport.
Law Runes drop in goblin sacks in Bramblemead. That is the early farm. Runecrafting 16 lets you make them at a rune altar, which is the adult farm. Keep a stack on the hotbar. Standing on a stone and pressing E opens the destination list.
Carry a spare core while you explore. When a new biome looks safe enough for a mining loop, you should be able to plant a stone the same afternoon without running home for ingredients. Stone and essence are cheap; the core is the item you forget. A spare also covers the Armour Bench, Blacksmith’s Bench, and other stations that eat a core as a tax.
Furnace recipe and the open sky rule
Shards have a day-one job: the furnace.
- 24 Stone
- 8 Clay
- 4 Charcoal
- 10 Fire Runes
- 8 Vault Shards
Clay is a Whispering Swamp rock. Charcoal is a kiln product. Fire Runes come from goblin luck or Runecrafting 13. The furnace must be unroofed. Put it in a courtyard, not under the house. If smoke has nowhere to go, the station will not smelt. Superheat from Artisan 20 speeds it; the building guide covers how to park the rest of the stations under cover while this one stares at the sky.
Later blast furnaces and forges ask for more cores, granite, and dragon leather. Do not spend every core on lodestones if you are about to unlock a smithing upgrade. One house stone, one region stone, one core in the pack is a healthy ratio until mithril.
How to run a vault without wasting a core
Scout the blue flag. Plant or confirm a lodestone outside if you already have a spare core. Eat. Drink. Enter. Pull guardians one room at a time; Archons hit harder than Sentinels. Grab side chests. Pull levers before you jump at a core you can see but cannot reach. Windstep and other traversal spells skip broken bridges; if you do not have them yet, take the long stairs.
You can snatch a core and run, but you will miss shards and recipes. First vault of a region: full clear. Repeat farm: grab respawned cores and leave.
Party runs in co-op should assign a loot caller. Cores on a dedicated server are world objects; greed wipes are how friends learn manners. One player with a crush weapon, one with range or mage, and a builder waiting outside with lodestone materials is the clean pattern.
Region flags worth chasing
Temple Woods north and south are Power Level 2 teaching vaults. Bramblemead and Whispering Swamp stay in that band. Fractured Plains and Bloodblight step to 3–4. Stormtouched Highlands is a 4 with vine and wall gates. Fellhollow and later regions push 5 and above. If the flag is in a biome whose metal you cannot smith, you are a tourist. Take the recipe, leave the pride clear for later.
Vaults are how Construction stations, metal tiers, and Dragon Slayer come online. Run the first two before you daydream about Velgar, then keep a core in the pack.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How do I find vaults on the map?
Look for a blue flag with white stripes. The first vaults sit north and south of Temple Woods. Later flags appear as you enter new regions on the walkthrough.
What is the lodestone recipe?
32 Stone, 20 Rune Essence, and 1 Vault Core. Fast travel between stones costs Law Runes from goblin sacks or Runecrafting 16.
Why will my furnace not smelt?
It must be unroofed. Build it in a courtyard with open sky. The recipe is 24 Stone, 8 Clay, 4 Charcoal, 10 Fire Runes, and 8 Vault Shards.
Do Vault Cores respawn?
Yes. Plinths refresh on a multi-day timer, so a cleared vault remains a core farm. Carry a spare core while you explore so you can plant a lodestone in the next region.
