RuneScape: Dragonwilds Dragonwilds Ranged Build

Bows, then crossbows. Hide climbs with the map. Dragons that fly are your job.

Last updated:

Ranged in RuneScape: Dragonwilds is the style you pick when you want dragons to be a geometry problem instead of a Parry exam. You train the Ranged skill by shooting. You wear hide, not plate. You never get a shield on a bow or a crossbow. Power level still rules: a leather body and an ash shortbow in Umbral Sands is not a ranged build, it is a wipe.

Jagex has the game in Steam Early Access from 15 April 2025, with 1.0 scheduled for 15 September 2026. Skills cap at 99. Online co-op is one to four, or up to six on a dedicated server. Kuldra is the 1.0 queen. Your current ranged job is vault lanes, Velgar’s air phases, Fuzan’s kite, and showing up in the hide of the region you entered.

Shop sticks on the weapons tier list and hides on the armor tier list. Ground-holding is the melee page. Rune burst is the magic page. Dragon Slayer specifics sit in the Dragon Slayer guide.

Bows, then crossbows

Start on shortbows and longbows you can actually feed. Ash and oak in the valley, then blightwood when the swamp is open. Arrow tier matters as much as the bow: iron arrows on a decent bow beat empty adamant bolts you cannot smith yet.

Crystal Bow and iron arrows versus Velgar. This is the A-tier specialist kit that even melee mains should craft. Velgar spends long windows in the air. A Crystal Bow, or an iron / blightwood bow dumping iron arrows, is how a ranged player owns Dragon Slayer instead of waiting under the hitbox. The Challenge Horn is still a quest item you place on the altar, not a throwing weapon.

Crossbows with adamant bolts are the late climb, in the Umbral power band. Do not rush a crossbow you cannot supply. A fed bow is always better than a starved crossbow. When adamant is online, bolts plus hide is the ranged version of “I belong in this desert.”

Hunter-style and blightwood longbows fill the middle: correct for the region, replaceable later.

Dragonhide ladder

Hide is the ranged plate. Leather / Reinforced in Bramblemead — get out of cloth; vaults expect Power Level 2. Stay on the best hide you can tan through bronze and iron regions if you are committed to kiting. You can wear some iron if you must, but you throw away ranged set bonuses and add weight you will feel when Velgar lifts.

Blue dragonhide in Dowdun Reach, Power Level 6, beside mithril and mystic. Red dragonhide in Umbral Sands, Power Level 7, beside adamant and Infinity. Black dragonhide at 1.0, Power Level 8, beside rune and Ancestral for the Kuldra raid.

Craft matching pieces. A blue hide body with bronze legs is a day-one compromise, not a build. Magical Mending and a repair anvil at camp keep red hide from becoming a durability trap in the desert. Ranged set bonuses exist to support kiting and repeat shots, not to make you a second plate tank. If you wanted block 46, you would be on Dragonblight with a mace.

How you kite Velgar

Bring antipoison. Bring iron-tier ammo. Bring a lodestone plan so a wipe is not a fifteen-minute jog.

When Velgar is down, shoot and strafe the slam. When he is up, you are the person melee was waiting for: Crystal Bow or iron arrows, keep moving, skip the extra hit in breath. The Dragon Slayer page has the tells; your job is the air phase. Tan hide — iron plate rangers still cannot Parry on a bow.

How you kite Fuzan

Umbral Sands is heat plus a boss that wants you to panic-sprint in a straight line. Red dragonhide, adamant bolts or the best bow you can feed, and the same air/water respect mages use for sunscorch. You do not have Tempest Shield. You have distance and a dodge.

If melee is in the party, they take landed windows. You never join them in the puddle. If you are solo, the whole fight is a circle-strafe with ammo math. Bring more bolts than you think. Bring food. Bring a Law Rune budget. Kuldra at 1.0 will ask for black dragonhide and a raid ammo plan. Until 15 September 2026, Fuzan is the kite exam that actually exists.

Vaults, ammo, and party role

Early vaults can be Bone Club rooms; crush is still crush. A ranged main still crafts the club for South Temple Woods, then swaps back to a bow for anything that keeps distance. Later vaults are lane control: shoot sentinels before they finish a wind-up, do not stand in archon melee range proving a point.

Ammo is the rune pouch of this style: iron arrows for Velgar, adamant bolts for Umbral. Do not vendor the stack. Keep a crate at camp, and train Rocksplosion so you can smith your own metal.

In co-op you are wings and any dragon that leaves the floor. Zero ranged hates Velgar; four rangers hate vault archons. Mix with melee and magic.

Solo ranged is clean because flight phases do not brick you. Keep a cheap one-hander for face-tank vault rooms, then go back to the bow. 1.0 will add black hide and raid ammo; the style stays shoot, kite, wear the hide of the region.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What is the best ranged weapon for Velgar?

A Crystal Bow, or a solid iron / blightwood bow with iron arrows. Flight phases are why ranged exists on that fight. See the Dragon Slayer guide and the weapons list.

When do I switch from bows to crossbows?

When you can smith and supply adamant bolts in the Umbral Sands band. A fed bow beats an empty crossbow. Do not skip iron arrows waiting for bolts.

Which dragonhide should I wear?

Leather or Reinforced early, blue in Dowdun Reach, red in Umbral Sands, black at 1.0. Matching pieces beat mixed plate. Full ladder on the armor list.

Can ranged solo, or do I need melee?

Solo ranged is viable. Keep a cheap melee swap for vault faces. In co-op, let melee hold the floor and magic burst packs while you own wings and kite Fuzan.

Is the Challenge Horn a ranged weapon?

No. It is a Dragon Slayer quest item placed on Velgar’s altar. Fight with a bow.
