RuneScape: Dragonwilds Dragonwilds Melee Build

Attack skill, one-hand plus shield or two-hand, and the metal of the region you can actually walk.

Last updated:

Melee in RuneScape: Dragonwilds is the Attack skill plus whatever power-level metal you can smith. It is not a locked class. You can still pull a bow for Velgar’s flight or a staff for a utility spell. The build works when the weapon in your hand matches the biome, the shield matches the block band, and you have trained Attack far enough to Parry.

Jagex has the game in Steam Early Access from 15 April 2025, with 1.0 scheduled for 15 September 2026. Skills cap at 99. Online co-op is one to four players, or up to six on a dedicated server. Kuldra remains the 1.0 dragon queen; your Early Access melee job is vaults, Velgar, Fellhollow, Dowdun, and Umbral Sands.

Read this page next to the weapons and armor lists. Combat unlocks also sit on the skills tier list. If you would rather kite than Parry, the ranged and magic builds will make you happier.

Weapon path

Bone Club first. Hunt Bramblemead, tan what you need, and take a club into the early Dragonkin vaults. Crush folds guardians faster than a stone dagger. The stone club is tutorial only; replace it the moment bone exists.

Bronze, then iron, on a one-hander plus shield. Sword or mace is the honest line. Bronze is Whispering Swamp. Iron is the Dragon Slayer ticket. Special attacks unlock at Attack 8, so an iron mace with a special is a different weapon from an iron mace you mash. Do not skip bronze to “save bars.” Vaults in the swamp expect that power band.

Abyssal Whip when Bloodblight is farmable. Abyssal Demons drop the Abyssal Spine. The whip is late-Early-Access S-tier melee: reach, bleed, a special that changes rooms. Block is poor, so you trade Dragonblight’s comfort for damage. Jagex has said the whip will climb a power band at 1.0, with a weaker Bloodblight drop filling the old slot. Craft the current whip for the current loop; expect a retune.

Mithril and adamant greataxes or greatswords. Two-handers take over in Dowdun Reach and Umbral Sands if you do not want to live on whip timing. You give up Parry. Tempest Shield becomes your panic button. In co-op, the two-hander is not also the breath sponge.

The Challenge Horn is not a melee weapon. It is a quest item you place on Velgar’s altar.

Attack milestones you actually need

Attack 5 — Parry. Craft a wooden shield from ash logs and learn the timing on goblins before you enter a vault. Leather, then bronze, then Anti-Dragon (block 39, same band as bronze, learned from the Whispering Swamp vault effigy).

Attack 8 — specials. Weapon-specific. This is when one-handers stop feeling like the same five-hit string. Train here before you treat Bloodblight as a farm.

Attack 11 — Tempest Shield. Air Runes, a timed block that ignores damage, a burst at the end. Use it on vault archons and on Velgar slam windows. It is not a substitute for iron plate.

Fire enchant later in the Attack tree. Fire plus Astral on a held melee weapon, burn on crits. Nice on whip and two-hander alike. Do not delay iron and Dragon Slayer to chase it. You do not need 99 Attack for any Early Access dragon. You need the next named unlock and the next metal.

Armor and shields

Wear plate of the region: Reinforced to start, bronze plate in the swamp, iron plate for Velgar, steel in Fellhollow, mithril in Dowdun, adamant in Umbral. Rune plate is 1.0.

Shields: wooden and leather to learn Parry; bronze and Anti-Dragon at block 39; iron and Dragonblight at block 46. Dragonblight needs Velgar’s head turned in for a visage, then visage plus Anti-Dragon plus vault mats at the anvil. That is the melee shield you keep after Dragon Slayer. Matching melee pieces cut block stamina, spike crits after blocks, and punish staggered targets. Three iron pieces plus Dragonblight is a build.

How you fight

Vaults: Parry the readable swings, special the sentinels, Tempest Shield the room you misread. Bone Club then metal. Bring Law Runes so a wipe is a lodestone, not a hike.

Velgar: iron plate, Dragonblight or iron shield, antipoison, and a bow swap for flight. Melee only works when he is on the ground. Standing under breath in plate is still a wipe. Learn the slam and spike tells in the Dragon Slayer guide; a greataxe does not solve air time.

Fuzan and Umbral: adamant two-hander or an upgraded whip, adamant plate, and respect sunscorch. If the party has a ranger or mage, let them kite while you hit landed windows. Kuldra is a 1.0 raid. Rune melee is prep, not an Early Access drop. Finish Umbral first.

Fire enchant is extra; Rocksplosion is how you afford adamant. In a party, hold the room and let magic delete packs and ranged cover wings. Solo, keep iron arrows in the bag even when the whip is equipped.

Do not skip Parry, walk into Velgar in bronze, or sit on a stone club. The current whip still carries current vaults even if 1.0 will retune it. Train Attack on the enemies in front of you, craft the next metal, and repair before the altar.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What melee weapon should I craft first?

Bone Club for early vaults, then a bronze sword or mace with a shield, then iron for Velgar. Bloodblight now drops the Power Level 4 Abysmal Whip. The true Abyssal Whip is a Power Level 7 masterwork recipe at the Burning Spire in Umbral Sands (1.0). Mithril or adamant two-handers cover Dowdun and the desert. See the weapons list.

Do I need a shield for this build?

For one-hand melee, yes. Parry at Attack 5 needs a shield. Anti-Dragon (block 39) then Dragonblight (block 46) after Velgar. Two-hand greataxes skip the shield and lean on Tempest Shield instead.

What armor do I wear for Velgar?

Iron plate. Bronze is the swamp set, not the dragon set. Full notes are in the Dragon Slayer guide and the armor list.

Should I train Magic or Ranged on a melee character?

Keep a cheap bow for flight phases. Do not split Attack XP evenly with the other two styles in solo. Party roles can cover magic and ranged instead.
