RuneScape: Dragonwilds Builds

Three combat styles, no locked classes. Craft the power level of the region you are standing in.

RuneScape: Dragonwilds does not give you a class screen. There is no Knight, Sage, or Ranger talent tree that locks the other two out. You land on Ashenfall as an expedition member, you pick up a stone club, and then you decide — for this hour, this vault, this dragon — whether you stand in melee, dump runes, or kite with a bow. That decision is a build, not a character slot.

Jagex has the game in Steam Early Access from 15 April 2025, with 1.0 scheduled for 15 September 2026. Skills go to 99. Online co-op supports one to four players, and Shockbyte dedicated servers raise that to six. None of those facts create a “main class.” What creates a working kit is the power level of the weapon and armor you are wearing plus the combat skill that feeds it.

This hub points at the three style pages: melee, magic, and ranged. Shop the weapons and armor lists after you pick a style, and rush the chore-deleting unlocks on the skills tier list. Kuldra, the endgame dragon queen, does not care what you named the build in a notebook; she cares whether you showed up in rune, black dragonhide, or Ancestral robes when 1.0 opens the Scorned Wilderness.

The three combat styles

Melee trains the Attack skill. One-hand plus shield or two-hand. Parry at Attack 5, special attacks at 8, Tempest Shield at 11. You take vault guardians in the face and you hold Velgar when he lands. Bone Club into bronze or iron sword/mace plus shield, then Abyssal Whip, then mithril and adamant greataxes or greatswords.

Magic trains by casting and by mage kills. Staves are two-handed. Runes come from goblin sacks until Runecrafting takes over. Robes climb mystic in Dowdun Reach, Infinity in Umbral Sands, Ancestral at 1.0. Utility spells — Bones to Peaches, blink/wind movement, air and water for Umbral sunscorch — are half the reason to play the style.

Ranged trains by shooting. Bows first, crossbows later with adamant bolts. Crystal Bow and iron arrows are the Velgar flight answer. Hide climbs leather to blue dragonhide in Dowdun, red in Umbral, black at 1.0. You exist to punish dragons that will not land and to kite Fuzan instead of tanking sand.

You can swap styles on one character. The tax is XP and inventory. A solo player should pick one combat skill to push past the early milestones and keep a cheap swap (a bow on a melee account, a staff for utility) rather than triple-wielding three half-trained kits.

Why power level beats a named class

Ashenfall’s regions are the real spec filter: stone and wood, then bone and Reinforced leather, bronze and Anti-Dragon, iron and Dragonblight, steel in Fellhollow, mithril / blue hide / mystic in Dowdun Reach, adamant / red hide / Infinity in Umbral Sands, then rune / black hide / Ancestral at 1.0.

A “melee main” in bronze plate with a stone club is not a melee main. They are under-geared. A “mage” in Infinity robes with no Fire or Law Runes is a tourist. Craft the region’s metal or hide, then argue about whip versus greataxe.

Shields only exist for one-hand melee. Wooden and leather get you Parry. Bronze and Anti-Dragon share block 39. Iron and Dragonblight share block 46. Staff and bow users spend that slot on movement and distance instead.

Hybrid parties

In co-op, the interesting builds are the ones that do not all stand in the same hitbox.

Two players can be melee plus ranged, or melee plus magic, so Velgar’s air phases stop being a wipe. Four players can run a plate blocker, a two-hander, a Crystal Bow, and a staff. Six-player servers can add a second ranger.

Split non-combat work too: Construction versus the rune altar. Everyone still crafts their own power-level armour.

Solo is viable. Solo means you bring a bow even if you melee, you lodestone more often, and you do not take Fuzan as a face-tank homework assignment.

How to pick a style today

Pick melee if you like Parry, vault rooms, and standing on Velgar’s claws when he lands. Pick ranged if dragon flight windows tilt you and you would rather kitestrife Fuzan than learn Tempest Shield timing. Pick magic if you already want Runecrafting for lodestones and you like deleting packs with the same resource that feeds Rocksplosion.

Then follow the region ladder. Do not grind Attack to 50 with a stone club, skip bronze for a whip video, or hoard adamant for a 1.0 rune dream while Umbral Sands chews you.

Velgar is the Early Access story check: iron, antipoison, Challenge Horn as a quest item (not a weapon), and a bow swap. Fuzan is the Umbral check: adamant-tier tools and kiting. Kuldra is the 1.0 queen. Prep rune / black hide / Ancestral when that window opens on 15 September 2026. Until then, finish Umbral Sands and keep your combat style’s current cap in repair.

1.0 will retune special-attack bars and raid math. Style identity should survive: melee blocks, ranged kites, magic spends runes. Open a style page, craft the matching set, and stay on that combat XP until the next named dragon.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Does Dragonwilds have classes?

No. You choose melee, magic, or ranged as a combat style and back it with the region’s weapon and armor power level. Start with the melee, magic, or ranged page.

Can I play more than one style on one character?

Yes. The tax is training time and inventory. Solo players should main one combat skill and keep a cheap swap, such as a bow on a melee account for Velgar’s flight.

What should a co-op party bring?

At least two styles. One blocker in plate plus a kite (bow or staff) covers Velgar and Fuzan better than four identical maces. Party size is one to four, or up to six on a dedicated server. See the co-op guide.

Does skill level 99 matter more than gear?

No. Skills cap at 99, but a 70 Attack stone club still loses vaults. Craft the power level on the weapons and armor lists, and rush milestones on the skills list.

What build do I need for Kuldra?

Kuldra is the 1.0 dragon queen. Prep rune, black dragonhide, or Ancestral robes for your style when that raid opens. Until 15 September 2026, finish Umbral Sands in adamant, red hide, or Infinity. Details on the Kuldra guide.
