Armor Tier List

Armor in RuneScape: Dragonwilds is a power-level ladder tied to Ashenfall’s regions, not a transmog wardrobe. Jagex has the title in Steam Early Access from 15 April 2025, with 1.0 scheduled for 15 September 2026. Until that window, you climb Reinforced leather through adamant. Rune, black dragonhide, and Ancestral robes are the 1.0 raid kit for Kuldra, not a set you smith in Bramblemead.

We rank sets the same way we rank the weapons tier list: by whether the power level matches the biome, whether the set bonus helps the style you fight in, and whether the piece still matters on Velgar, Fuzan, or the later dragon queen. Pair a set with a build before you tan a full hide stack. A mystic robe on a mace user is a fashion death. Iron plate on a kiting ranger is extra weight you will feel when Velgar takes off.

Skills cap at 99. That does not replace wearing the metal of the region you just walked into.

The set ladder

Reinforced leather (Power Level 2). Bones and hides from Bramblemead wildlife. This is the first real set. Vaults after the tutorial expect it. Replace it when bronze bars exist, not when you “feel ready.”

Bronze plate (Power Level 3). Whispering Swamp line. Melee players should smith the plate as soon as the furnace is fed. Wear it while you learn the Anti-Dragon Shield recipe from the swamp vault effigy. Ranged and magic can stay on leather a little longer, but they still need the power band.

Iron plate (Power Level 4) for Velgar. This is the Dragon Slayer check. The Dragon Slayer guide assumes iron, antipoison, and a shield in the 46-block band if you are melee. Walking into Velgar’s Rise in bronze tests the wipe timer, not a strategy. Iron is A-tier as a forever set and S-tier as a boss ticket.

Steel (Power Level 5, Fellhollow). The wither-and-ghost region wants a new metal. Do not haul iron into Fellhollow because “it still has durability.” Power level is the stat the region reads.

Mithril, blue dragonhide, mystic robes (Power Level 6, Dowdun Reach). Three answers for three styles. Melee smiths mithril. Rangers tan blue dragonhide. Mages weave mystic. Wearing the wrong style set wastes the bonus: hide on a greataxe, plate on a staff.

Adamant, red dragonhide, Infinity robes (Power Level 7, Umbral Sands). Same triangle, hotter biome. Fuzan and desert sunscorch punish anyone who entered in mithril “to save bars.”

Rune, black dragonhide, Ancestral robes (Power Level 8 at 1.0). Prep for the Scorned Wilderness and Kuldra. Do not stall your Umbral loop waiting for these. They are not the current Early Access finish line.

Follow the region walkthrough so you never craft two metals behind. The letter grade is almost always “the set of this region is S here and A the moment the next ore appears.”

Shields: the block bands that actually matter

Shields are their own mini-ladder, and the masterwork versions share numbers with the plain metal ones.

  • Wooden and leather shields get you Parry (Attack 5) in the valley. Craft wooden from ash logs. Replace it.
  • Bronze shield and Anti-Dragon Shield share block 39. Anti-Dragon is the masterwork from the Whispering Swamp vault effigy. Same block as bronze, extra dragon-breath utility, and it is the ingredient for the next shield. Craft Anti-Dragon if you can afford the vault mats.
  • Iron shield and Dragonblight Shield share block 46. Dragonblight is the Velgar reward path: head to the Wise Old Man, visage plus your Anti-Dragon Shield, vault shards, and a vault core at the anvil. Repairing it costs visage. Iron shield matches the block if you have not finished the quest yet. After Dragon Slayer, Dragonblight is the melee shield you keep.

Two-handers, bows, and staves do not use these slots. Tempest Shield (Attack 11) is a spell, not a substitute for Dragonblight if you are in one-hand melee. Specials still unlock at Attack 8 regardless of which shield you hold.

Style bonuses versus mixed sets

Melee plate, ranged hide, and mage robes grant set bonuses at one, two, and three matching pieces. Stack hide for kiting, mystic then Infinity for rune damage, and plate plus Dragonblight for block.

Mix inside a style more safely than across styles. In co-op, one blocker in plate and one kiter in hide or robes.

Named dragons and craft order

Velgar: iron plate if you melee, a 46-block shield if you melee, hide if you kite, antipoison either way. Breath is the wipe, not the claw. Fuzan: adamant / red hide / Infinity. Under-leveled plate cooks. Kuldra: rune / black hide / Ancestral when 1.0 opens the raid. Until 15 September 2026, treat those names as a shopping list for later.

Tan Reinforced. Smelt bronze plate and learn Anti-Dragon. Smelt iron plate and finish Dragonblight after Velgar. Steel in Fellhollow. Split at Dowdun: mithril, blue hide, mystic. Repeat in Umbral with adamant, red hide, Infinity. Keep Magical Mending runes so you are not walking home in broken legs.

A broken high-tier set is worse than a repaired set that matches the region. Repair at camp. This list will move when 1.0 retunes defenses and Prayer arrives; the biome order will not.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is the Anti-Dragon Shield better than a bronze shield?

They share block 39. Anti-Dragon is the masterwork you want because it resists dragon breath and upgrades into Dragonblight. Learn the recipe from the Whispering Swamp vault effigy.

How do I get the Dragonblight Shield?

Finish Dragon Slayer. Turn in Velgar’s head for a visage, then smith visage plus your Anti-Dragon Shield with vault shards and a vault core. Iron shields share the 46 block if you have not crafted it yet.

Should mages wear plate for Velgar?

No. Wear the highest magic set you can craft and kite. Plate’s melee bonuses do not make a staff hit harder. See the builds hub for style kits.

When do I craft rune armor?

At 1.0, scheduled for 15 September 2026, alongside black dragonhide and Ancestral robes for the Kuldra raid. In current Early Access, adamant / red hide / Infinity in Umbral Sands is the cap.
