RuneScape: Dragonwilds Dragonwilds Magic Build
Staves, rune supply, and robe tiers from mystic through Infinity — Ancestral waits on 1.0.
Magic in RuneScape: Dragonwilds is a combat style, not a class you pick at character create. You train it by casting and by mage kills. The staff in your hands multiplies rune damage. The robes on your back sit in the same power-level ladder as plate and hide. If either piece is two biomes behind, you are not a mage; you are a tourist with a stick.
Jagex has the title in Steam Early Access from 15 April 2025, with 1.0 scheduled for 15 September 2026. Skills go to 99. Parties are one to four online, or up to six on a dedicated server. Kuldra is the endgame dragon queen, not an Early Access farm. Your current magic job is vaults, Velgar support, Dowdun mystic, Umbral Infinity, and not running out of Law Runes on the walk home.
Runecrafting details live on the skills guide. Melee and bow backups live on the melee and ranged pages. Raid prep lives on the Kuldra guide.
How you train
Cast on purpose. Utility XP is real, but kills are how Magic climbs at a combat pace. Goblins, then vault creatures that sit still long enough for a four-hit staff string, then whatever the region says is weak to the element you can afford.
Keep a melee or ranged swap for rooms that rush you. Staves are two-handed. You do not get Dragonblight. Tempest Shield is an Attack spell; if you want it, you train Attack on the side. Most mage players skip that and take distance instead.
Do not sit on an ash battlestaff until Magic 50. High-tier staves — staff of light-style options and later blightwood / draconic sticks — only become S-tier once Magic and the rune pouch can feed them.
Runes: goblin sacks, then the altar
Early runes drop in goblin sacks and similar junk. That is enough for tutorial casts and a few Rocksplosion bursts. It is not enough for a magic main.
Runecrafting is the real supply. Fire Runes feed combat, Superheat, and Mining spells. Law Runes are lodestones. Astral Runes sit in the better utility recipes. Air and water matter more the moment you step into Umbral Sands. If you cannot name where your Law Runes come from, you do not have a magic build; you have a hiking hobby.
In co-op, one player can live on the altar. That person still wears robes and still carries a staff. Shared pouches do not excuse sending the “crafter” into a vault in leather.
Staves and robes
Staff progression follows wood and masterwork unlocks: ash and oak, then swamp and highland sticks, then high-tier staves once Magic is trained. If the power band is below the region, upgrade the staff.
Robe progression is the clean ladder. Early cloth while you are still in Bramblemead and the swamp. Mystic robes in Dowdun Reach, the Power Level 6 magic set, beside mithril and blue dragonhide. Infinity robes in Umbral Sands, Power Level 7, beside adamant and red dragonhide. Ancestral robes at 1.0, Power Level 8, beside rune and black dragonhide for the Kuldra raid.
Wear matching magic pieces for the set bonus. A mystic top on iron platelegs wastes both styles. Magical Mending exists so Infinity is not a one-death costume.
Utility spells that make the style real
Combat strings are half the kit. The other half is why people stay on a staff.
Bones to Peaches turns vault leftovers into another minute of fighting. Mages who ignore it hike for cooked meat like everyone else.
Blink / wind movement — Surge and the related dodge-channel spells — is how you skip the shield you cannot equip. Vault traps, Velgar spikes, Fuzan sand: you leave the circle instead of Parrying it.
Air and water for Umbral sunscorch. The desert is a heat check wrapped around a boss. Water cools and air keeps you moving. Walking into Umbral Sands on fire runes only is how Infinity robes become a respawn timer.
Rocksplosion and Axtral Projection are Mining and Woodcutting spells, but they spend the same rune economy. A magic main should be the person who never runs out of Earth and Fire, not the person who begs the melee friend for bars.
Bosses and party role
Velgar: you are not the iron plate. You are burst when he lands and movement when he breathes. Antipoison still applies. A Challenge Horn is a quest item, not a mage weapon. If the party has no ranger, your job includes the air phase; if they do, dump runes on landed windows and stay out of spikes.
Fuzan: Infinity plus water/air utility plus adamant-tier staff math. Kite. Do not stand in sunscorch to finish a combo. Kuldra: Ancestral when 1.0 opens the Scorned Wilderness on 15 September 2026. Until then, finish Umbral. Do not park in Dowdun mystic waiting for a robe set that is not on the anvil yet.
In a one-to-four group, magic is pack clear and dragon burst. Let melee hold the floor and ranged own wings. A six-player server can run two mages if the altar can feed them.
Solo magic is viable if you lodestone often and accept that some vault archons want a melee swap. Train Magic on kills, craft the region’s robes, and keep the altar lit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How do I train Magic in Dragonwilds?
Cast combat spells and take mage kills. Utility casts help, but vaults and region enemies are the pace. Upgrade the staff when the next wood or masterwork band opens.
Where do runes come from?
Goblin sacks at first, then Runecrafting. Law, Fire, and Astral are the supply you cannot skip. The skills guide covers the altar and milestone spells.
When do I get mystic, Infinity, and Ancestral robes?
Mystic in Dowdun Reach, Infinity in Umbral Sands, Ancestral at 1.0 with the Kuldra raid kit. Do not skip Infinity waiting for Ancestral.
Can a mage tank Velgar or Kuldra?
No. You kite and burst. Melee holds landed windows; ranged covers flight. Kuldra prep is Ancestral robes when 1.0 opens — see the Kuldra guide. For ground-holding kits, use the melee build; for kiting without runes, use the ranged build.
